Orthopaedic Physician Assistant (OPA)

Training: Qualified Physician Assistants attend the Army Orthopaedic Physician Assistant Residency Program. The OPA Resident receives a curriculum that encompasses classroom didactics, lectures, conferences, demonstrations, seminars, practical exercises, grand rounds, academic subjects, journal club meetings, clinical applications, research and operating room experience. The goals and objectives of the training fulfill professional requirements of the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills associated with an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency.

Duties performed: In addition to the normal skills, knowledges and behaviors required of PAs, the Orthopaedic Physician Assistant (OPA) examines, diagnoses, and treats or prescribes courses of treatment for patients having disorders, malformations, diseases, and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, under the supervision of an Orthopaedic Surgeon or Orthopaedic Service within or in support of Medical Treatment Levels II-V.

Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant (EMPA)

Training: Qualified Physician Assistants attend the Army Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency Program. The EMPA Resident receives a curriculum that encompasses classroom didactics, lectures, conferences, demonstrations, seminars, practical exercises, grand rounds, academic subjects, journal club meetings, clinical applications, research and operating room experience. The goals and objectives of the training fulfill professional requirements of the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills associated with an Emergency Medicine Residency.

Duties performed: In addition to the normal skills, knowledges and behaviors required of PAs, the Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant (EMPA) examines, diagnoses, and treats or prescribes courses of treatment for the initial phase of disease and injuries. Provides comprehensive care to patients at each echelon of the health service support system, under the supervision of a fully trained Emergency Physician. Provides definitive lifesaving resuscitative care.

Aviation Medicine Physician Assistant (APA)

Training: Qualified Army Physician Assistants occupying or being assigned to positions requiring Aviation Medicine Physician Assistant qualification attend the Army Flight Surgeon Course at the U.S. Army School of Aviation Medicine (USASAM), Fort Rucker, Alabama. Students partcicipate in a curriculum that develops the necessary experience, skills and knowledge to medically screen and manage health care support for Army aviation units and personnel. The goals and objectives of the training fulfill professional requirements of the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills required of an Army Flight Surgeon.

Duties performed: In addition to the normal skills, knowledges and behaviors required of PAs, the Aviation Medicine Physician Assistant (APA) provides medical examinations for flying duty, provides primary care for aviation personnel and their family members, participates in the Aviation Safety Program (including fitting of personnel for safety equipment), and assists in aircraft accident investigations.

Occupational Health Physician Assistant (OHPA)

Training: Qualified Physician Assistants attend a masters producing program in Public Health or Occupational Health approved by Department of the Army and the Office of the Surgeon General. The OHPA receives a curriculum that encompasses classroom didactics, lectures, conferences, demonstrations, seminars, practical exercises, academic subjects, clinical applications, and research. The goals and objectives of the training are directed at the fields of preventive medicine, industrial hygiene, toxicology, epidemiology, statistics and occupational medicine.

Duties performed: In addition to the normal skills, knowledges and behaviors required of PAs, the Occupational Health Physician Assistant (OHPA) assesses the occupational health needs for active duty personnel, identifies hazardous occupational exposure and stress factors, develops mechanisms to monitor soldier health trends, conducts worksite evaluations and medical surveillance, performs epidemiological studies, monitors hearing conservation, respirator protection, radiation protection and vision conservation programs, conducts sexually transmitted disease surveillance, and coordinates industrial hygiene priority and support.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Perfusionist Physician Assistant (CTSP-PA)

Training: Qualified Physician Assistants attend a nationally accredited perfusion training program approved by Department of the Army and the Office of the Surgeon General. The CTSP-PA receives, under the direction of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Consultant to the Surgeon General, a curriculum that includes practical exercises, clinical applications, and research. The goals and objectives of the training are directed at successful completion of the national certifying examination for perfusionists.

Duties performed: In addition to the normal skills, knowledges and behaviors required of PAs, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Perfusionist Physician Assistant (CTSP-PA) operates extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or temporarily replace patient circulatory and respiratory function. CTSP-PAs administers blood products, anesthetic agents and other drugs through the extracorporeal circuit. CTSP-PAs assist in the surgical management of patients in the operating room, including, but not limited to vein harvest for coronary artery bypass grafts, chest closure at end of case, and post-op management of patients.
