1974 | Army PAs assigned as medical platoon leaders (administrative duties in addition to clinical duties) |
1974-1975 | Army PAs began staffing rural overseas health clinics as Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) |
1975 | National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) was founded |
1976 | First PA consultant to The Surgeon General was assigned |
1978 | Air Force began commissioning PAs |
1979 | First PA instructors joined the faculty of Academy of Health Sciences |
1980 | Specialty training in Orthopaedics and Cardiovascular Perfusion initiated for Army PAs |
1981 | Emergency, Aviation and Occupational Medicine specialty training initiated for Army PAs |
1982 | First Army PA Career Activities Officer was assigned |
1983 | PAs were assigned to Army division headquarters as managers and planners |
Army PA concept combat proven in Grenada | |
1984 | Defense Audit Task Force on Non-Physician Health Care Providers recommended to Congress that the PA should be commissioned in an Officer Corps |
1984 | Army PA Program (through affiliation with Oklahoma University) became a baccalaureate program |
1984 | First Army PA assigned to The White House Medical Unit |
1987 | Assignment of first U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) PA consultant |
1988 | Navy decides to commission PAs effective FY89 |
1988 | Public Health Service decision to commission its PAs in FY89 |
15 Jun 1990 | Proposal to commission Army PAs approved by Chief of Staff, Army |
15 Sep 1990 | Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel approve Army PA transition plan |
15 Dec 1991 | Defense Authorization bill including Army PA commissioning approved |
Aug 1990 | 29 retired Army PAs recalled to active duty in support of Operations |
July 1991 | Desert Shield and Desert Storm |
Jan 1991 | CW3 George Fisher, PA Consultant to VII Corps Surgeon, assumes duties as Secretary to the General Staff (SGS), 332d Medical Brigade |
4 Feb 1992 | A total of 257 warrant officer PAs (all components) are commissioned in the grades of Second Lieutenant (2LT) through Major (MAJ) in simultaneous ceremonies around the world |
25 Apr 1992 | MAJ Jimmie E. Keller is appointed the first Chief, Physician Assistant Section, Assistant Chief, Army Medical Specialist Corps, Office of the Surgeon General |
Jul 1992 | MAJ Sherry Morrey-Augsburger appointed Army Medical Department Regimental Adjutant |
Dec 1993 | Patrick D. Feely, Chief PA Section, Assistant Chief, AMSC becomes first Army PA to be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) |
Sep 1994 | LTC Donald Parsons becomes first PA to hold seat of Army PA Program Director |
First PAs are selected for resident attendance in Command and General Staff College | |
Oct 1994 | First PAs selected for doctorate level training |
May 1995 | The Army PA Program is selected as Interservice PA Program, training PAs of all services, effective May 1996 |
Aug 1995 | CPT Michael Cavanagh first PA selected for promotion to MAJ "Below the Zone" |
6 Oct 1998 | MAJ Louis H. Smith III sworn in as third Chief, Physician Assistant Section, AMSC |
